Job opening: Global Director, Report for the World

Report for the World is a global service journalism program that matches independent local newsrooms with talented journalists who cover critical beats including health, environment, gender, education, labor, disinformation and criminal justice.

We launched in February 2021 in India and Nigeria, placing our first-ever cohort of corps members in May 2021 and expanded to Brazil in September 2021, with a total of 15 reporters. With early support from the MacArthur Foundation and Google News Initiative, we will double the size of the program in 2022, launching a global open call for newsrooms in Q2 with the larger goal of supporting 500 reporters worldwide by 2026.

We seek a thoughtful, engaging leader with a global perspective, passion for service and depth of experience collaborating across borders. The global director will take ownership of the selection process of independent digital media organizations who seek to hire talented emerging and mid-career journalists to cover critical coverage gaps, build more sustainable operations, and join a global community of journalists dedicated to serving the information needs of communities.

The global director will work closely with teammates across The GroundTruth Project, home of Report for the World and its sister initiative Report for America, and will be responsible for building out the Report for the World team. We seek to ensure the Report for the World experience is excellent and meaningful for all of our newsroom partners and corps members, and the global director will play a critical role in our success.

This position is fully remote and may be based anywhere.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Lead day-to-day operations of Report for the World, including: maintaining excellent relationships with current newsroom partners and corps members; supporting world-class training and development opportunities for newsrooms and corps members; closing new newsroom partnerships; and the corps member selection process.
  • Steadily grow and manage the Report for the World team to support sustainable scale-up of the program over time.
  • Represent GroundTruth/Report for the World in a number of public-facing opportunities including events, panels, and fundraisers.
  • Work with the Communications Team on building the Report for the World brand globally and in multiple languages.
  • Collaborate with Development and Executive Leadership teams to create a 5-year development plan to scale the operation, contribute to ongoing fundraising efforts.
  • Work with the GroundTruth Editorial Hub to help RFW newsrooms and corps members better serve their communities and reach new audiences.
  • Develop partnerships with journalism schools, trade organizations, training providers and other mission-aligned partners to help scale the program sustainability and at a high level of quality.

Skills & Experience

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • 10+ years of international journalism, media or public service leadership experience
  • Deep experience leading global teams, working across languages and time zones
  • Expertise in professional program design and/or entrepreneurship
  • Fundraising and/or business development acumen
  • Past/current mentorship of emerging journalists or other service-oriented professionals
  • Bilingual or trilingual
  • Abiding commitment to facilitating a welcoming and supportive work environment
