GroundTruth’s newsletter moves to Substack

Dear Reader,

If you’ve been following my work—or if we’ve crossed paths along this journey—you know that I’ve always believed that on-the-ground reporting—authentic, local storytelling—is the cornerstone of democracy. It’s how we hold power to account, amplify voices that need to be heard, and build bridges at a time of deep division.

This belief is what led me to start The GroundTruth Project ten years ago and our journey over the last decade has been chronicled here in this newsletter.

Together with our teams at Report for America and Report for the World, we’ve brought forward vital local stories from across the U.S. and around the globe. Through these efforts, I’ve had the privilege of sitting down with reporters covering the critical issues of our time and with people whose stories often go untold. It’s work I’m deeply proud of, and I’m happy it resonates with a growing audience of readers like you. You are part of a community of 15,000 subscribers, and we’re reaching new audiences every day.

To add to that momentum, I’m excited to announce that this newsletter is moving to Substack next year.

On January 24, 2025, we’ll officially make the switch to Substack. I see this as my next big reporting project for GroundTruth—a chance to go beyond the standard newsletter format and create a space for deeper connection, sharper storytelling, and more meaningful dialogue. A place where we can meet you where you are—where ideas flow freely and communities are built around shared values. It’s a space for thoughtful conversation at a time when too much of the media landscape feels chaotic and fractured.

As I’ve written before in this space, the road ahead for journalism is daunting and in some places dangerous. These are perilous times not only for the craft of journalism, but for the idea of truth itself. The results of the recent U.S. elections highlight growing threats to press freedom and to democracy. We’re facing a storm of disinformation and misinformation, which has coincided with a collapse of local news that has left whole communities in “news deserts.” Across those barren landscapes, there is a steady erosion of trust in the very institutions that uphold our democracy. We need to figure this out. The stakes are very high. And yet, despite it all, I remain hopeful.

I’m hopeful because I believe in you, our readers, who understand that journalism matters. I’m hopeful because I believe in the next-generation journalists we support—reporters who live and breathe the stories they cover, who are committed to serving their communities with integrity and courage. And I’m hopeful because I see a path forward.

The move to Substack will take you with us as we explore that path, bringing you even closer to the work we do, with stories that link the local to the global and provide context and clarity in a confusing world. It’s about taking our community—one that believes in the power of local journalism to strengthen democracy and hold those in power accountable to the next level.

And we need you with us. You can sign up for our Substack today to ensure you don’t miss a beat. Your support has always been the heartbeat of GroundTruth, and we want you to join us as we write this next chapter.

As we make this transition, I want to thank you because your belief in what we do keeps us going. Together, we’ve shown what’s possible when journalism is done with integrity and a purpose to serve. We’ve proven that local stories have the power to inspire change, to connect communities and to remind us of our shared humanity.

So, as the holidays approach, I hope you’ll join us on Substack and help us continue this vital work. Let’s prove—once again—that journalism matters, and that the work of preserving it belongs to all of us.

With gratitude,

Charles M. Sennott
