America Post-Roe

The U.S. Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, the 1973 landmark legislation which protected a person’s right to have an abortion, and allow state governments to enact laws to ban or restrict abortions has generated a cascade of reactions across the nation.

The responses from some states have been swift; 13 had “trigger laws” in place, intended to ban abortion as soon as Roe was reversed. In many of them, a ban is currently in effect, and seven more states are likely to ban abortion soon. The implementation of each ban differs from state to state as do the specific penalties and exceptions. The procedure remains legal in 20 states with many of those states expanding access; but for the remaining states, the future of abortion access is uncertain.

Report for America Corps members all across the country have reported on how this ruling is affecting the people and organizations in their states.

Their reporting since June 24, when the decision was made public, and in the previous months, thanks to a leak of the draft, has attempted to answer some of the most pressing questions for their communities, including Which demographics are disproportionately affected by this ruling? What are the options for people seeking abortions in states where they’re prohibited? What are clinics doing to mitigate damages? What are neighboring states doing to help? And how are advocates on both sides of the issue responding?

Explore our corps members’ coverage as they continue to  shed light on how this national issue is affecting their communities.
