GroundTruth Project names new VP of Communications

The GroundTruth Project, a nonprofit journalism organization and the home of Report for America and Report for the World, has named Sam Kille, a Marine veteran and established nonprofit communications leader, as its new vice president of communications.

Kille had been Report for America’s director of communications before serving as the organization’s interim VP of communications for the past year.

Kille brings more than two decades of nonprofit communications and leadership experience to his role. He has secured media coverage with print and broadcast outlets around the world and has appeared on several national programs.

Since joining The GroundTruth Project in 2020, the nonprofit’s efforts to place journalists in under-covered communities across the globe have been featured by CNN, FOX News, MSNBC, the New York Times, Washington Post and most notably, a “60 Minutes” segment that showcased Report for America corps members as an answer to the country’s rapidly-growing local news deserts.

Before joining The GroundTruth Project, Kille was the communications director for the Shepherd Higher Education Consortium on Poverty. Prior positions have included communications manager for the Bob Woodruff Foundation, a grant-making organization that supports post-9/11 impacted veterans; public affairs officer for Team Rubicon, a veteran-led disaster relief organization; and regional communications director for the American Red Cross in Greater New York, during which he served as the chief spokesperson for the response to Superstorm Sandy.

Kille began his professional career as an award-winning military journalist in the U.S. Marine Corps. He has a bachelor’s degree in public affairs from SUNY Empire State College; a certificate in nonprofit development and management from Molloy College; an associate degree in media from Nassau Community College; and studied journalism at the Defense Information School. He resides with his family on Long Island, N.Y.
